Chimera Ant Arc — Hunter x Hunter
The longest and most acclaimed arc in Hunter x Hunter. The birth of Meruem, the King whose power exceeds all human limits. The last battle of Isaac Netero. Gon's transformation and the cost of it.
Arc Overview
The Chimera Ant arc begins when a Chimera Ant Queen — capable of incorporating genetic material from consumed prey — begins eating humans in the NGL (Neo-Green Life), a nation that bans all technology. The ants she produces inherit human intelligence, Nen capability, and physical power far beyond normal human limits.
The Hunter Association dispatches an operation team: senior Hunters Netero, Morel, and Knov, supported by Gon, Killua, and others. The operation culminates in a palace invasion — each team taking a separate target while Netero engages the King directly.
Meruem himself is the arc's most complex figure: born to dominate and destroy, he develops an unexpected connection with Komugi — a blind human shogi champion — that humanizes him in ways combat never could. His death, alongside Komugi, is the arc's emotional center.
Key Characters
- Meruem — The Chimera Ant King. Born with power beyond human limits; his arc ends with the series' most tragic death sequence.
- Neferpitou — First Royal Guard. Kills Kite, triggering Gon's breakdown. Ultimately killed by Gon's transformed state.
- Isaac Netero — Fights Meruem alone. The only human who could threaten him — through self-sacrifice rather than Nen.
- Gon Freecss — His arc peaks and breaks here. The transformation and its aftermath define the rest of the series for him.
- Killua Zoldyck — Activates Godspeed. Saves Gon's life multiple times and ultimately arranges his recovery.
- Morel Mackernasey — Battlefield control via Smoky Jail. One of the operation's most valuable tactical assets.
- Knov — Infiltration specialist. Breaks psychologically upon sensing Neferpitou's En; completes his mission regardless.
- Palm Siberia — Captured and transformed; assists the operation from inside the palace using Wink Blue.
Nen Highlights
The Chimera Ant arc is the series' highest-stakes Nen showcase. Every major technique is pushed to its limit.
- Aura Synthesis — Meruem's Specialist ability absorbs devoured Nen users' power, making him exponentially stronger after eating Neferpitou and Pouf.
- 100 Type Guanyin Bodhisattva — Netero's Enhancer Hatsu. The fastest set of strikes shown in the series — still not enough to defeat Meruem conventionally.
- Godspeed — Killua's Transmuter ability reaches its final form. Whirlwind and Speed of Lightning allow imperceptible-speed movement and attack.
- Doctor Blythe / Terpsichora / En — Neferpitou's three abilities cover healing, combat enhancement, and a kilometers-wide detection field.
- Smoky Jail / Deep Purple — Morel's Emitter battlefield dome and smoke soldiers control entire combat zones.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Chimera Ant arc about in Hunter x Hunter?
The Chimera Ant arc follows the Hunter Association's operation to eliminate the Chimera Ants — hybrid creatures born from a Queen who consumed humans — whose King, Meruem, represents an existential threat to humanity. The arc runs three major threads: Gon and Killua fighting their way through the NGL toward the palace; the allied Hunters' palace invasion led by Netero; and Meruem's unexpected humanization through his bond with the blind shogi player Komugi.
What happens in the Netero vs Meruem fight?
Netero fights Meruem alone inside the palace while the rest of the operation proceeds. He uses his full power — 100 Type Guanyin Bodhisattva at the speed of prayer — and cannot land a decisive blow. Meruem methodically dismembers him. Netero, acknowledging he cannot win through Nen alone, triggers the Poor Man's Rose — a miniaturized nuclear weapon embedded inside his own body. The explosion mortally wounds Meruem and poisons him with a toxin that ultimately kills him.
What happens to Gon in the Chimera Ant arc?
Gon's arc in the Chimera Ant arc ends with his most extreme moment in the series: after finding Kite dead and Neferpitou unable to restore him, Gon enters a state of total rage and sacrifices all his future potential — making a vow with his Nen to become powerful enough to destroy Neferpitou. The result is an adult form with aura output that shocks Pitou and is described as beyond anything seen. He kills Neferpitou, then collapses — and loses his Nen entirely. He is comatose for weeks and only survives through Killua and Alluka's intervention.
Who are the Chimera Ant Royal Guards?
The three Royal Guards are Neferpitou (cat-type, Specialist — Doctor Blythe, Terpsichora, kilometers-wide En), Shaiapouf (butterfly-type, Manipulator — Beelzebub, scales that manipulate memories), and Menthuthuyoupi (an amalgam-type, Enhancer with enormous raw power). All three are born to protect Meruem at any cost and operate at a level above any human fighter except the absolute top tier.
