Based on the canonical Nen hexagon from the Hunter x Hunter manga. Select your type to see how well it aligns with the other five.

The hexagon order is: Enhancer → Transmuter → Conjurer → Specialist → Manipulator → Emitter → (back to Enhancer). Adjacent types share 60% affinity; opposite types share only 20%.

How Nen Affinity Works

In Hunter x Hunter, every person is born with a natural affinity for one of the six Nen categories. While a user can train all six types, their efficiency drops the further the category sits from their own on the hexagon. This is why Gon (Enhancer) can fire aura blasts in Jajanken's Paper form — it uses Emission, which is adjacent — but his raw power always comes from Enhancement.

Specialist is a unique case: its position on the hexagon gives it medium affinity with Conjurer and Manipulator, but its abilities are entirely unique to the individual and cannot be replicated by any other type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nen affinity in Hunter x Hunter?

Nen affinity refers to how easily a user can learn and use techniques from a Nen type other than their own. In Hunter x Hunter, each type sits on a hexagon — adjacent types share 60% affinity, types two steps away share 40%, and opposite types share only 20%. A user can still learn other types, but the further from their own, the harder it is to master.

Which Nen types have the highest compatibility with each other?

Adjacent types on the hexagon have the highest affinity at 60%: Enhancer–Transmuter, Transmuter–Conjurer, Conjurer–Specialist, Specialist–Manipulator, Manipulator–Emitter, and Emitter–Enhancer. This means users of these pairings can more easily borrow techniques from each other.

Which Nen types are opposites on the hexagon?

The opposite pairs (lowest affinity at 20%) are: Enhancer–Specialist, Transmuter–Manipulator, and Conjurer–Emitter. These types are hardest to cross-train — a pure Enhancer like Gon would struggle greatly to learn Specialist techniques.

Can a Nen user learn techniques from other types?

Yes. All Nen users can use all six types to some degree — a user's affinity percentage indicates how efficiently they can use that type's techniques. An Enhancer can still use Emission (60% efficiency) or Conjuration (40%), but will never match a dedicated Emitter or Conjurer without exceptional mastery.
